SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANT STAGES
The main objective bar screens is to prevent entry of solid particles / materials above a certain size; such as plastic cups, paper dishes, polythene bags, condoms and sanitary napkins into the sewage treatment plant. If these items are allowed to enter plant, they clog and damage the STP pumps, and can cause shutdown of the plant. The screening is achieved by placing a screen of specified openings made out of vertical bars, placed across the sewage flow. Larger sewage treatment plants may have two screens. One coarse bar screen with larger gaps between bars, followed by a fine bar screen with smaller gaps between bars.
OIL & GREASE TRAP / GRIT TRAP
The grease and grit trap is placed at the discharge point of the canteen/ kitchen waste collection area itself to arrest solid and fatty matter at source. The wastewater output from this unit is taken to the equalization tank. The solids and fats that are separated in this unit are disposed off along with other biodegradable waste. An oil and grease / grit trap is generally not an essential unit in a typical residential complex. It is however a mandatory unit in commercial and Industrial units with a canteen on campus.
The sewage from the bar screen chamber and oil, grease and grit trap comes to the equalization tank. The equalization tank is the first collection tank in sewage treatment plants. Its main function is to act as buffer for incoming raw sewage that comes at wide fluctuating flow rates and convey raw sewage at steady flow rates to next sewage treatment processes. The equalization tank stores the sewage that comes at high flow rates in peak periods, and lets it out during the non-peak period when there is no / little incoming sewage.
Aeration tank together with settling tank or clarifying tank is a heart of any sewage treatment unit. Most of the treatment is provided here with help of microbes and bacteria. The main function of aeration tank is to maintain high population levels of microbes and bacteria. This maintained mixture is called mother liquor suspended solids (MLSS). This liquor is passed on to the sedimentation / clarification tank, where the microbes are made to settle at the bottom. For retaining microbes in aeration tank long period, the settled microbes are recycled back.
CLARIFICATION TANK / SETTLING TANK
The function and purpose of clarifier / settling tank is threefold
- Allow settling of biomass solids in the MLSS (biomass slurry) coming out of the aeration tank, to the bottom of the clarifier
- To thicken the settled biomass, in order to produce a thick underflow
- To produce clear supernatant water, in the overflow from the clarifier
PRESSURE SAND FILTER
The pressure sand filter (PSF) is used as a tertiary treatment unit to trap the trace amounts of solids which might have escaped from the clarifier, Pressure sand filters can typically handle up to 50 mg/l of solids in an economical manner. This unit is essentially a pressure vessel that is filled with graded media (sand and gravel). The water filtered with PSF is passed on to the next stage in the STP chain i.e. Activated Carbon Filter (ACF).

An activated carbon filter receives water from pressure sand filtration system. Like pressure sand filter it is also a part of tertiary treatment . It improves water quality parameters like BOD, COD, color, turbidity and odor.
